In fashion, talent is only part of the story. Breaking into the industry and thriving once you’re there takes insight, access, and support from those who’ve walked the path before. That’s why mentorship sits at the heart of the Fashion Scholarship Fund experience.

Every FSF Scholar is paired with a professional mentor through the FSF Mentoring Program, a one-on-one relationship designed to provide career guidance, personal growth, and a network that lasts long after graduation. Supported by a powerful community of industry leaders and a dedicated digital platform, this program bridges the gap between emerging talent and seasoned professionals who are shaping the future of the fashion industry.

WHY MENTORSHIP MATTERS

In 2025, FSF’s Mentoring Program connected Scholars with industry leaders from across the fashion industry, in roles such as Design Director, Merchandising Executive, Brand Strategist, Marketing Leader, and Talent Development Manager.

Mentorship is more than advice. It’s a relationship built on trust, learning, and shared purpose. For Scholars, it’s a chance to ask questions, explore career paths, and gain feedback from professionals working across design, merchandising, marketing, and business strategy. For mentors, it’s an opportunity to invest in the next generation, give back to the community, and share the insights that shaped their own success.

FOR SCHOLARS: WHAT TO EXPECT

All FSF Scholars are matched with a mentor through FSF’s mentorship platform. Matches are made based on each Scholar’s area of interest and case study focus, ensuring that every Scholar connects with a mentor who understands their goals.

Program overview:

  • Kickoff: Mentors and mentees are introduced in January and encouraged to connect within 10 days.

  • Cadence: Monthly meetings are recommended, though pairs can meet as often as they prefer.

  • Ownership: Mentees take the lead in initiating communication and setting agendas.

  • Focus areas: Career direction, networking, job search strategy, interview preparation, and professional growth. Design mentors may also review portfolios and provide feedback on creative work.

“Being a part of the FSF Mentorship Program has been transformative for me. My mentor encouraged me to advocate for myself in the workplace, and through her guidance, I’ve gained both confidence and clarity in my professional journey.”
— Tracy Ewli-Kwakutse, FSF Alumnus, E-commerce Intern at What Goes Around Comes Around

Through consistent connection and honest dialogue, FSF Scholars gain real-world insights, find clarity, and develop the professional skills that will carry them into the industry.

“My FSF mentor taught me to speak with conviction, to present my ideas with confidence. That lesson has stayed with me throughout my career.”
— Alex Jacobs, FSF Alumnus, Design Director at Ramy Brook

FOR MENTORS AND PARTNERS: HOW TO GET INVOLVED

FSF mentors are leaders across fashion’s many disciplines, including design, merchandising, marketing, and business. Each mentor plays a vital role in supporting the next generation of the fashion industry by offering guidance and insight, and fostering meaningful opportunities for emerging talent.

“Mentorship is everything. It’s not just top-down advice. It’s long-term dialogue, reciprocal energy, and support. Every successful career has mentorship at its core.”
— Greg Colussy, FSF Alumnus, Senior Director of Men’s Merchandising at Michael Kors

By volunteering as a mentor, professionals help students navigate a complex industry while building a more inclusive, informed, and connected community.

“The future of fashion relies on passing knowledge forward. Investing your time and expertise in your creative community is one of the greatest gifts you can give.”
— Jill Hub, FSF Alumnus, Senior Design Manager at adidas Originals

How It Works:

  • FSF handles mentor matching through their designated mentoring platform

  • FSF provides best practices, conversation guides, and program resources

  • Mentors commit to one academic year and meet monthly, or at a mutually agreed cadence

Mentors describe the experience as energizing and deeply rewarding, a chance to help define the next era of fashion leadership while expanding their own perspective.

“Mentoring is a rewarding opportunity to make a meaningful difference in someone’s life. I am so grateful for the connection made by being a part of the FSF Mentoring Program.”
— Christine Kennedy, FSF Mentor, Senior Manager of Technical Design at Under Armour
